Consciousness is a big problem for functionalism, since it seem that we could have a computational system that does all that people do and not be conscious at all. E.g. program the population of China to pass symbols around.

Cognitive science has been too much concerned with internal representations and computations and has not noticed the role that interactions with the world play in human thought.

5. Searle's Chinese room argument.
If I am merely an input-output device for symbol processing, then I don't understand Chinese.
Similarly, computers have syntax only, not semantics: their symbols get their meaning only from human users, not from relation to the world.
Computers lack intentionality, the property of being about the world.
1. Ignore it? No: the points about the importance of the body and the physical environment are too convincing. We don't want disembodied minds.
2. Expand CRUM? Perhaps add new kinds of representations to deal with perceptual and visual images.
Note: Dreyfus endorses connectionism in 3rd edition of What Computers Can't Do. So maybe his complaint wasn't against CRUM, but against symbolic versions thereof.
3. Supplement CRUM? Add new ideas about nature of interaction with the enviroment. E.g. control theory (Mackworth). Have robots that interact with the world and learn about, thereby acquiring intentionality.
4. Abandon CRUM? No: the world challengers do not have a fully worked out alternative
theory of mind, and have little to say about the diverse kinds of problem solving
and learning that rules, concepts, analogs, etc. can explain.
